Both the Cavemen and Cavegirl wrestling teams posted victories over the Roswell Coyotes in a dual meet on Thursday, January 22, in Roswell.

The Cavemen outdueled the Coyotes 34-28, while the Cavegirls downed the Lady Otes 42-30.

En route to their six-point victory, Cavemen Phenyx Meier, at 113 lbs., and Francisco Calderon, at 150 lbs., won by falls.

“I was really proud of the effort we got from our boys. We were without four of our starters. Justin Owens, Juan Rubio, William Graziano, and Xavier Huff were all sick,” said CHS head wrestling coach Mark Pratt. “I feel confident these kids would have probably won, had they been there.

“Had we had everybody, our margin of victory would have more than likely been much bigger, but we squeezed by Roswell to get the W, and that says a lot about the kids we did send,” said Pratt.

Pratt decided not to pull up junior varsity kids to fill CHS’s open spots (other than Andrew Fuentes, who filled in for Owens) because the JVs had a meet in Hobbs on the same day.

With the win, the Cavemen sat at 2-0 in conference.

In besting the Lady Coyotes 42-30, the Cavegirls got falls from Emily Fuentes, 120 lbs.; Kendall Graziano, 145 lbs.; and Arianna Campos, 190 lbs.

“Our girls continue to improve. For them, the win over Roswell was a big one,” said the CHS head coach. “They’re 1-1 in district now. They could easily be 2-0, had they not had to give up so many points due to open weight classes in a narrow loss to Clovis.”

Next up for the Cavegirls: Regionals in Roswell on Friday and Saturday, February 6-7. The Cavemen will compete in Regionals on Friday and Saturday, February 13-14, at West Mesa High School in Albuquerque. The top seven placers in each weight division will qualify for state.

On January 22, in Hobbs, the Cavemen and Cavegirl JVs competed in the Mark Pratt Oil Patch Invitational. No team awards were given. Teams participating, along with Carlsbad and host Hobbs, were Artesia, Roswell High, Clovis, and Frenship, TX. Medals went out to the top four placers in each weight division.

The Cavemen JVs Sabas Hernandez, at 132 lbs., and Rydge Crow, at 138 lbs., grabbed gold medals for first-place finishes. Cavegirl JV Faith Abeyta, at 235 lbs., also collected a gold medal for a first place showing.

Note: The CHS wrestling teams hosted the Hobbs Eagles on Thursday, January 29. A win over the Eagles would have earned the Cavemen this year’s district championship. A victory for the Cavegirls would have given them conference runner-up honors. Results of the match, boys and girls, will be posted in the February 6 edition of the Carlsbad Local.
