The Cavegirl volleyball team took a step back in their race for this year’s District 4/5A championship after sustaining a 3-2 loss to the Clovis Wildcats in their conference inaugural. CHS’s clash with Clovis took place on Tuesday, October 14, in Carlsbad.

After dropping the opening set 25-23, the Cavegirls rallied to capture the second set 25-22 and the third 25-18.

Although up 2-1, Carlsbad’s young girls were unable to close out the Wildcats. The Cavegirls dropped the fourth set to Clovis 25-20 and the fifth 15-8.

“Our girls put up a great fight against Clovis, but in our loss, they learned a valuable lesson,” said Cavegirl head coach Taylor Hardison. “We have to fight hard all the way and finish.

“With each game they play, though, they’re getting a better perspective on what it takes to win,” said the Cavegirl coach. “After our close loss to Clovis, they’re ready to move on—and win—in their hunt for this year’s district title.”

Following the loss, the Cavegirls sat at 0-1 in District 4/5A play and 4-13 on the year.In the conference’s other district inaugural, Hobbs defeated Roswell 3-1.

Carlsbad was scheduled to take on the Roswell Coyotes in Roswell on Thursday, October 16. On Tuesday, October 21, they’ll return to Carlsbad to battle the Hobbs Eagles.

The loss dropped the Carlsbad girls to 2-2 in District 4/5A. In conference play, they share second place with Clovis. On the season, they are 4-11-3.

“This was a tough game, and a tough loss for our kids,” said Cavegirl head coach Misty Long. “We had some good opportunities; we just didn’t finish them.”

Next up for the Cavegirls on Saturday, October 18, will be the Roswell Coyotes in the Alien City. On Tuesday, October 21, they’ll entertain the first-place Hobbs Eagles in their final regular-season game of the year.

Cavemen Fall 3-2 to Clovis

The Cavemen soccer team gave the Clovis Wildcats all they could handle before dropping a 3-2 decision to the District 4/5A second-place 12-5 Cats.

“Down 0-3 at the half, our kids came out in the second period to shut Clovis out,” said Cavemen head coach Mario Fierro. “It was a great defensive effort from all of our kids, which included a PK save by our keeper Cristian Munoz.

“We battled back to almost tie the game up with less than a minute left in the game. I was so proud of our kids,” he said. “This was some of the best soccer we’ve played in weeks.”

Scoring for the Cavemen were Ike Anderson on an assist from Issac Martinez and Anderson, again, on a PK.

The loss left Fierro’s young Cavemen sitting at 2-14 on the year and 0-4 in conference play.

The Cavemen will host the Roswell Coyotes on Saturday, October 18. On October 21, they’ll close out their season against the Hobbs Eagles in Hobbs.
