CHS Track Teams at State

The Cavemen thinclads placed third and the Cavegirls fourth at the District 4/5A Track and Field Championships in Hobbs on Friday, May 9.

The Cavemen tallied 70 points for their day’s work, just 2.5 points behind the runner-up Roswell Coyotes, who scored 72.5. Hobbs, with 109 points, won the boys’ division, while Clovis, with 54.5, placed fourth.

In the girls’ division, the Clovis Wildcats, with 106 points, grabbed first place. The Hobbs Eagles, who scored 106, placed second. Rowsell finished third with 49 points, and the Cavegirls, who posted 42, placed fourth.

All told, the Cavemen picked up 13 medals at the District 4/5A meet, four gold, five silver, and four bronze. The Cavegirls collected eight medals, two gold, three silver, and three bronze.

Overall, second-year head coach Charles Millar felt his young teams represented themselves, Carlsbad High, and its community well.

“Our kids competed well in Hobbs. Although we didn’t finish where we had hoped to, we were able to send a lot of kids to state,” said Millar. “We’re sending three relay teams on the boys’ side and one on the girls.’ Totally, we’re sending about 35 athletes, so I’m not complaining! Overall, these kids have had a great year.”

The state track meet is scheduled to get underway on Friday and Saturday, May 16-17, in Albuquerque.

Gold Medalists: Bobby Castaneda, 100 Meter Dash; Bryan King, 110 Meter Hurdles; Jonah Moyers, High Jump; and CHS’s 4x200 Meter Relay team, featuring Tayvin Marsh, Jaden Harper, Bryan King, and Bobby Castaneda.

Silver Medalists: Kason Perez, Javelin; Bobby Castenada, 200 Meter Dash; Tavyin Marsh, Triple Jump; the CHS 4x200 Meter Relay team, featuring Tayvin Marsh, Jaden Harper, Bryan King, and Bobby Castaneda; and the CHS Sprint Medley Relay team, comprised of Trey Barta, Damian Valencia, Aryniaus Sanders, and Rex Reynolds.

Bronze Medalists: Isaac Williamson, 110 Hurdles; Isaac Williamson, 300 Hurdles; Kyler Daughtry, High Jump and 300 Meter Hurdles; and Isiaha Almodova, Discus.

Cavegirl D4/5A Medalists

Gold Medalists: Atria Wells, Shot Put, and the CHS Sprint Medley Relay team, consisting of Kaylee Dowdy, Norah Gallagher, Deandra Balcazar, and Abbey Dugan.

Silver Medalists: Cassie Bielstein, 100 Meter Hurdles, Atria Wells, Discus.

Bronze Medalists: Nora Gallagher, Long Jump; Meagan McKibben, Triple Jump; and the CHS 4x200 Relay team of Chaselynn Casey, Nicki Abeyta, Estrella Herrera, and Patience Renfro.

Most of Millar’s young track and field athletes will be returning for 2026.
