On Friday and Saturday, April 4-5, the Carlsbad High School Cavemen and Cavegirl tennis teams will host the Claire Higgins Family Invitational.

“We’ve invited three teams to compete alongside us in this weekend’s tournament,” said assistant coach Diamond Morrill. “Also participating will be Randall High School of Amarillo, Cleveland, and Artesia.

“Although the field will consist of just four teams, we expect the level of competition to be very good,” she said. “With district play just around the corner, this year’s field should be very good for our kids.”

CHS will open District 4/5A play on Thursday, April 10, in Carlsbad against the Clovis Wildcats.

The Claire Higgins Format

The format, sites, and times for the Claire Higgins Family Invitational will be as follows:

Friday, April 4: Boys singles will take place at Carlsbad High School starting at 9 a.m. Players will compete in four separate brackets, No. 1’s and No. 2’s, No. 3’s and No. 4’s, No. 5’s and No. 6’s, and No. 7’s and No. 8’s. So, there will be four draws.

Girls’ singles will be at the River Courts and follow the same start time and draw format as the boys.

Saturday, April 5: All doubles play will be at Carlsbad High School starting at 9 a.m. The format for doubles will use two brackets. One bracket for a school’s No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams and another for two mixed doubles teams.

Bluth 3rd at Amarillo Relays

The Cavemen and Cavegirl tennis teams recently returned from the Amarillo Relays with good results.

Caveman Lucas Bluth (2-2) placed third in singles, while Jose Gomez and Sydney Azzinaro (3-1) chalked up a victory in the tourney’s consolation final.

“Lucas played well at Amarillo,” said coach Morrill. “He worked really hard to gain control of each match. Overall, he gave up very few games throughout the tourney.

“Jose and Sydney lost their first-round match. However, the Amarillo Relays was the first time they’ve played doubles together. But the more they played, the better they got,” said the CHS coach. “They cut down on their number of unforced errors and began to play smart, consistent tennis. The result was three straight wins, culminated by a victory in the championship round of their consolation bracket.

“Jose, Sydney, and Lucas battled hard and never gave up,” said Morrill. “Our staff was so proud of their efforts in what proved to be a very tough tournament.”
