A CHS Swim Team Report

The CHS Swim Team made a splash at the Academy Invitational Swim Meet in Albuquerque on Saturday, January 11. The meet marked the team’s first overnight trip of the season.

There were a few concerns about the weather and road conditions earlier in the week, but CHS Athletic Director Greg Haston gave the team the green light to travel Friday morning, and they departed Carlsbad High School at 12:30 p.m.

The competition began on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Albuquerque Academy. Eighteen CHS swimmers were in attendance—nine girls and nine boys. This was one of the biggest meets they have competed in this season, with 26 teams and over 450 swimmers from all over New Mexico.

There was some pretty tough competition, but the Cavemen and Cavegirls rose to the occasion, with each team taking eighth place. The Cavegirls scored a total of 90 points at the meet, and the Cavemen 119.

Leading the pack for the Cavegirls was Olivia Jang, a junior who scored 29 points for her team. She also turned in a couple of new State Qualifying times in the Girls’ 100 Yard Freestyle (58.22) and the Girls’ 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:14.01).

Senior Mason Dhenin led the Boys’ team with 21 points. Freshmen Benjamin Jang (16 points) and Rex Reynolds (20 points) also contributed to the Cavemen’s success.
