The young Carlsbad Cavemen soccer team continues to show improvement. On Tuesday night, September 9, in the Cavern City, CHS downed the Goddard Rockets 3-1 to pick up their second win of the season, versus five losses.

Down 0-1 in the first period, CHS tied the game up at 1-1 on an Edwin Minjares penalty kick. Second half play saw the Cavemen take charge, scoring two goals to grab the 3-1 victory.

Scoring for Carlsbad were Ike Anderson, on an assist from Minjares, and Jesus Medina, unassisted.

“Although we’ve had a couple of tough weeks, we continue to look forward. Going down early in the first period, as we did with Goddard, is never easy but our kids gathered themselves to tie the game up at the half,” said Cavemen head coach Mario Fierrio, Jr. “We had a great half-time reset and were able to make some changes that ultimately helped us get the victory.

“Coach Daniel Flores highlighted some points of emphasis on attacking Goddard’s defense, and the team responded,” he said. “We’re all excited about earning our second victory of the season.”

The Cavemen picked up their first win of 2025 on September 6 at the Roswell Invitational. At the RI, they toppled the Alamogordo Tigers 7-3.

Scoring for CHS were: 1. Jeferson Vasquez on an assist from Zechariah Workman, 2. Jesus Medina on an assist from Lorenzo Munoz, 3. Issac Martinez, unassisted, 4. Jeferson Vasquez, unassisted, 5. Jesus Medina on an assist from Richard Rodriguez, 6. Geovanni Gonzalez, unassisted, and 7. Lorenzo Munoz on an assist from Jesus Medina.
