The Cavegirl soccer team opened District 4/5A play with a bang. On Tuesday, September 30, in Clovis, they knocked off the Clovis Wildcats 2-0.

The victory catapulted the Cavegirls, 1-0 in conference play and 3-9-3 on the year, to the top of this season’s conference standings. They share that spot with the Hobbs Eagles, who upended the Roswell Coyotes 3-0 on Tuesday.

Carlsbad jumped out in front of Clovis early in the match. During the first half of play, they scored both of their goals.

Scoring for the Cavegirls were Hayden Brose on an assist from Ariyana Rogers and Juliette Licon.

“This was really a big win for us. It’s the first time this year we’ve played solid soccer in both halves. All of our girls played up to their capabilities,” said Cavegirl head coach Misty Long. “Although we were able to score twice in the first half, things tightened up a lot in the second. We were able to hold on for the win due to a great defensive effort from all of our girls during the final frame of play.”

On Saturday, October 4, the Cavegirls will host the Roswell Coyotes. The JVs will take the field at 11 a.m., followed by the Cavegirls at 1 p.m.

“Roswell is a young team, but they appear to be playing well. Right now, they’re 8-7,” said Long. “They’ll be a formidable opponent for our girls.

“The race for this year’s district title should be a good one. Although Hobbs appears to be the frontrunner, overall, the teams appear to be playing pretty much at the same level,” said the Cavegirl coach. “As for us, I think we’ll be okay. I tell our girls we just need to show up for each game and play our hearts out.

“Our record is in no way an indication of what kind of team we are. We’ve played some pretty tough programs this season. We’ve also had to weather a few injuries and make a few adjustments,” said Long. “But our girls continue to work hard, and as we all know, good things can happen for those who work hard, as they did for us in Clovis.”

The Cavegirls have played 13 games in 26 days.
