If the amount of golf played has anything to do with preparing young linksters for post-season play, then the Carlsbad Cavemen and Cavegirls should be more than ready to tee up for this year’s District 4/5A tournament and beyond.

CHS will host this year’s District 4/5A tournament on Tuesday, May 6, at the Riverside Country Club Golf Course.

Over the past five days, Carlsbad High has competed in three tournaments, all with good results. The following is a recap of those performances.

Cavegirls 2nd, Cavemen 3rd at Colt Invite

Freshman Haddi May stepped up to card an 89 at the Roswell Colt Invitational in Roswell on Tuesday, April 29. May’s effort, tops on the Cavegirl scorecard, led the CHS girls to a runner-up finish at the meet. As a team, the Cavegirls carded a 368. The tournament champion Goddard Rockets fired a 359.

Also contributing to CHS’s second-place finish were Lindsey Carter, 90; Averee Padilla, 91; Hailey Carter, 98; and Cecilia Mascarenas, 100.

The Cavemen carded a 329 in Roswell to finish third. Artesia, with a 310, placed first.

Robbie Rodriguez, with a 79, led all CHS scorers. Others scoring for Carlsbad were Rev Valenzuela, 82; Chevy Thompson, 84; Jeremiah Raney, 84; and Anthony Hernandez, 97.

“Both the boys and girls played well in Roswell. Haddi May, with an 89, tied her personal best. The girls also got a great effort from Cecilia Mascarenas. Cecilia, a freshman, recorded a 100, which was a personal best for her.

“On Tuesday, May 6, we’ll be hosting the District 4/5A tournament at the RCC golf course,” he said. “If we can get all of our kids carding scores around their personal bests, we’ll be in great shape at the tournament.”

CHS Goes 1st, 2nd at Corazzi Classic

On Monday, April 28, at the Riverside Country Club Golf Course in Carlsbad, the Cavegirl golf team carded a 365 to capture the Buddy Corazzi Classic. The Cavemen, after registering a 325, finished second, one stroke behind the boys’ division champion Hobbs Eagles, who came in at 324.

Cavegirl Lindsey Carter, who carded an 81, placed first in the girls’ division. The Cavemen’s Jeremiah Raney, with a 73, took top honors in the boys’.

Rounding out the Cavegirl scorecard were Averee Padilla, 92; Haddi May, 95; Hailey Carter, 97; and Cecilia Mascaranas, 113. Rounding out the Cavemen’s scorecard were Chevy Thompson, 82; Anthony Hernandez, 82; Robbie Rodriguez, 88; and Rev Valenzuela, 93.

“The wind kicked up during our last few holes. But our girls stayed the course and finished strong,” said CHS head coach Brian Jones. “I was especially proud of Lindsey’s effort. Along with finishing first, her 81 was a new personal best.

“As for the boys, well, they continue to improve. Jeremiah Raney, in grabbing the tourney’s top individual honors, recorded a 73, so he is hitting the ball extremely well for us right now,” he said. “Dropping the Corazzi tourney by just one stroke was tough on them. But they all played well, and they’re coming together at the right time.”

Only District 4/5A teams (Carlsbad, Hobbs, Roswell, Clovis) competed in the Buddy Corazzi Classic.

Cavegirls 3rd, Cavemen 4th at Hobbs

Paced by Lindsey Carter’s 95, Hailey Carter’s 96, and Haddi May’s 97, the Cavegirl golf team placed third at the Hobbs Invitational in Hobbs on Friday, April 25.

The Cavemen, led by Jeremiah Raney’s 79, placed fourth at the Hobbs event. Not far off Raney’s pace were Chevy Thompson, 81; Robbie Rodriguez, 85; and Rev Valenzuela, 86.

“We played at Rockwind, and it’s really a tough course. Although the girls placed third, due to the toughness of the course, they struggled some,” said CHS golf coach Brian Jones. “Although their scores were up, they kept their games together, which helped them to place third—something our staff is very proud of.

“The boys played well also. Our staff is really pleased with the way they’re starting to come together. We’re seeing some scores bunched close together, something we’ve been working on doing all season,” he said. “Jeremiah Raney, with a 79, posted one of the lowest rounds of his career, and Chevy Thompson, with an 81, carded a 32 on the back nine at Rockwind. On his card, for the back nine, he posted six birdies.”
