All the hard work put in by the Cavemen and Cavegirl track teams during 2025 will be put to the test at the District 4/5A Tournament on Friday, May 9, in Hobbs. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.

Up for grabs will be the District 4/5A championship and berths in the state tournament, set to get underway May 16-17 in Albuquerque.

“The top two finishers at the district meet, regardless of mark or time, will qualify for the state track meet. Trying to figure out where to put kids in order for them to have the best chance at success is always a puzzle,” said CHS head coach Charles Millar. “But, if the kids run like they’ve been seeded to run, we should be able to get a few relay teams, individual sprinters, and kids competing in the field events qualified for state on Friday.

“Our kids have had a great season, and I’m so proud of how they’ve competed this year. I am also excited and nervous about our District meet,” said Millar. “The kids have been working really hard, and they deserve to go to state. I just hope they run and compete well and that we can get a few more of them to Albuquerque!”

CHS Lovington Invite Tune-up

Carlsbad’s final tune-up of the season, prior to the District 4/5A meet, took place at the Lovington Invitational in Lovington on Friday, May 2.

At the meet, the Cavegirls placed in 16 events and earned 12 medals. The Cavemen placed in 12 events and picked up six medals. No team scores were listed by Milesplit.

“I was very pleased with our performance in Lovington. It was a great tune-up for the district meet this week. Abbey Dugan had a great day. She had two PRs again, one in the open 800 and the other in the Javelin,” said Millar. “She has been a very welcome addition to our team this year. It’s incredibly impressive what she is capable of accomplishing!”

But Dugan’s performance wasn’t the only one to turn the CHS coach’s head.

“Sophia Trujillo (ninth), in the shot put, qualified for state on her last throw of the regular season. She is going to BPA nationals in Orlando, FL, this week, so she will miss the district meet,” said the CHS coach. “On her sixth and final throw, she threw 35’6”. It was good enough to earn her second place at the meet (behind Atria). Currently, she has the sixth best throw in the state.

“Also, Norah Gallagher (11th) qualified for state in the triple jump by .5 inches. She jumped 34’2.5” and needed 34’2” to qualify,” said Millar. “She had a great day in Lovington. Along with her effort in the triple jump, she also posted her season’s best in the 4x100 relay and long jump.”
