Carlsbad High’s Cavegirl and Cavemen golf teams teed off at the Roswell Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, April 21-22. Individual tournaments were held on both days.

Play took place for the girls at the NMMI golf course (Par 72) on Monday and at Spring River (Par 71) on Tuesday. The boys teed off at Spring River on Monday and NMMI on Tuesday.

“We got a lot of things done in Roswell,” said CHS head coach Brian Jones. “The competition was tough, but our kids were up to the challenge. Our staff was very proud of both the boys’ and girls’ efforts.”

The Cavegirls, riding Averee Padilla’s 86, placed second at Monday’s event at NMMI. On Tuesday, Lindsay Carter, with an 82, led the CHS girls to a third-place finish at Spring River.

The Cavemen, behind Anthony Hernandez’s 80, placed in a tie for sixth on Monday, and on Tuesday, placed seventh behind Chevy Thompson’s 80.

“The Spring River and NMMI courses were very different. NMMI is a wide-open course. Kids can pound their drivers and swing away,” said Jones. “However, Spring River is a very tight course. There are a lot of trees there and being able to hit the ball straight is a premium. Also, the greens had just been aerated and sanded so putting was very difficult.

“Our kids began to make adjustments as they moved along the courses,” he said. “To watch them do that was a definite plus for both programs. As courses are different, they need to be able to better understand how to play them.”

Jones was quick to cite several of his golfers for improved play.

“Avery Padilla, with an 86 at NMMI, and Anthony Hernandez, with an 80 at Spring River, posted personal bests in Roswell,” said the CHS coach. “Chevy Thompson had another 82 after having posted a couple of 81’s, so he’s showing some very consistent play, and Hailey Carter, after getting off to a rough start, kept her game together to finish strong.”

The CHS golf teams will compete next on Friday, April 25, in Hobbs at the Rockwind Golf Course. Tee times will begin at 9 a.m. On Monday, April 28, the Cavemen and Cavegirls will host the Buddy Corazzi Classic at the Riverside Country Club Golf Course. Play gets underway at 9 a.m.
