Each week, the Cavemen and Cavegirl golf teams continue to show improvement. Such was the case for both squads who competed at the Black/Murphy Invitational in Lovington on Thursday, April 10, and Ruidoso's Leroy Gooch Invite on Monday and Tuesday, April 14-15.

In Lovington, the Cavegirls, behind sophomore Averee Padilla's 87, placed third with a team score of 387. The boys, behind Chevy Thompson's 84, placed fourth with a 351.

"Lovington's course is pretty tough. Although the greens there are among some of the best in the state, they're small and fast, which caused our kids a few problems adjusting to the speed," said CHS head golf coach Brian Jones. "However, it was a great learning experience for our kids and should prove to be invaluable to them on down the road.

"We did have a couple of things to really celebrate, though. Averee Padilla's 87 and Anthony Hernandez's 88 were personal bests," he said. "The kids are doing a great job of getting their scores down. When we can get them all doing that at the same time, we'll be very competitive."

Leroy Gooch Invitational

On Monday, April 14, and Tuesday, April 15, the Cavemen and Cavegirls placed fifth in two separate tournaments at the Leroy Gooch Invitational.

On April 14, led by Lindsey Carter's 85, the Cavegirls posted a 364. On April 15, paced by Averee Padilla's 89, the CHS girls carded a 365.

The Cavemen, led by Chevy Thompson's 81, posted a 344 on April 14. On April 15, behind Robbie Rodriguez's 79, they carded a 330.

"Mountain golf is a little different than our kids are used to. The air is a lot thinner," said coach Jones. "Although we got off to a pretty rough start, after a few holes, they all settled down to play some pretty good golf the rest of the way.

"Our boys played well. On our second day of competition, Robbie Rodriguez carded a personal best of 79, while Anthony Hernandez and Chevy Thompson tied their personal bests of 81," he said. "It was an awesome day of golf for the boys. They're finally beginning to come together.

"As for our girls, they had a few troubles on the greens. But the mistakes they made are correctable," said the CHS coach. "They're getting closer and closer to having everybody score in the 80's. That's what we've been hoping for all season long. As with the boys, they're beginning to come together as a team. Right now, Cavemen and Cavegirl golf is looking very good."
