On Monday, April 20, the Cavemen and Cavegirl golf teams participated in the Roswell High Invitational. A two-day, 36-hole event, CHS chose to play only day one of the tournament.

“We’ve been invited to participate in the State Preview Golf Tournament, an 18-hole event to be held in Las Cruces on Monday, April 27. This tournament features the top ten girls’ and boys’ teams in the state. To be invited to it was quite an honor for our kids, program, and school,” said CHS head golf coach Brian Jones.

“In order to do that, we had to drop a tournament, so we played only the first round at the Roswell Invitational.

“However, we will compete at the Hobbs Invitational on Friday, April 24, and on Monday, April 27, we’ll travel to Las Cruces for the State Preview Golf Tournament,” said Jones. “So, for the next few days, our kids are going to be really busy.”

At Roswell, the Cavegirls were in fifth place after the tournament’s first day of competition, the Cavemen 10th. Overall, 14 teams comprised this year’s Roswell Invitational field.

Leading the Cavegirls’ effort in Roswell was Averee Padilla, who fired an 83 to finish seventh for her day’s work.

The top linkster for the boys was Chevy Chase. Chase carded a 78 and closed out his 18 holes of play in 23rd place.

“Averee has been playing really well for the past several weeks,” said Jones. “As she’ll be traveling with CHS’s culinary arts team to compete at Nationals in Baltimore for the next several days, we’re going to miss her a lot for our next two tournaments.

“As for Chevy, he got off to a slow start, but he battled hard and finished strong,” continued Jones. “Coming back after a slow start says a lot about just how far he’s come with the mental side of his game. He didn’t back off, and we’re really proud of him for the effort he put out to come back.”

Alien Invitational Results

On Thursday, April 16, at the Alien Invitational in Roswell, the Cavegirls placed fifth and the Cavemen seventh. Nine teams comprised both boys’ and girls’ fields.

Averee Padilla, with an 81, led the Cavegirl effort. A personal best, her round of 81 earned her the eighth spot on the tourney’s top ten list.

Chevy Thompson, with an 80, paced the Cavemen. One stroke behind Thompson’s pace was Becker Barnes, who carded an 81.
