One of the greatest joys of visiting your local library is discovering the hidden literary treasures created right in your own community. Local authors offer a window into the stories, landscapes, and experiences that shape the places we call home.

At the Carlsbad Public Library, we take pride in celebrating the voices of writers who live, work, and create in southeastern New Mexico. Their stories, whether fictional or nonfictional, capture the spirit of Carlsbad and the surrounding region, connecting us to our own community in unique and meaningful ways.

Carlsbad is fortunate to be home to authors who write across a wide range of genres, reflecting the diversity and richness of our local culture. Misty Price, for instance, has captivated readers with her debut novel, A Place to Take Your Shame. Price’s work explores deeply human themes with nuance and compassion, providing a lens into personal struggles, resilience, and redemption. Her storytelling resonates with readers both within our community and beyond, making her an important literary voice to celebrate.

Another outstanding local author is Donna Birchell Blake. Blake’s work often emphasizes the connections between family, history, and place, offering readers a sense of rootedness and belonging. Her novels transport readers to settings familiar to New Mexicans, blending evocative landscapes with compelling narratives. By writing about the region she knows intimately, Blake ensures that our local culture and heritage are preserved and shared through literature.

Celebrating local authors is about more than simply reading their books—it is about supporting the creative voices that thrive in our own backyard. Local authors contribute to a vibrant cultural ecosystem, inspiring other writers, artists, and community members. Visiting the Carlsbad Public Library to browse our collection of books by local authors is a way to engage with the stories that reflect our shared experiences and to nurture a stronger sense of community pride.

For readers who enjoy exploring New Mexico’s unique landscapes and history, local authors often provide perspectives that larger, national publications cannot. Whether through fiction that captures the spirit of our desert landscapes, memoirs that chronicle life in southeastern New Mexico, or poetry that reflects the rhythms of our community, these writers help preserve and celebrate our local identity.

Supporting local authors also means attending author events, book signings, and readings at the library or in local bookstores. These gatherings provide the opportunity to connect directly with the people behind the stories, to ask questions, and to gain insight into the creative process. Such interactions make reading a communal experience, bringing neighbors together to celebrate shared stories and culture.

At the Carlsbad Public Library, we invite you to explore the works of Misty Price, Donna Birchell Blake, and other talented local authors. By reading and supporting these writers, you help sustain a rich literary community while discovering new stories that reflect the heart and soul of Carlsbad. Your next great read may be right here at home, waiting on our shelves, written by someone from your very own community.

Celebrate local voices. Celebrate our community. Celebrate the stories that make Carlsbad and southeastern New Mexico a vibrant place to live, read, and create.
