The Cavemen and Cavegirl cross country teams recently returned from the Albuquerque Academy Extravaganza. Overall, the Cavemen placed 11th in a field of 21. The Cavegirls finished 17th in a field of 18.

Top performers for the Cavemen were Kaleb Vasquez, who placed 55th with a time of 17:56.81, and Aiden Mendez, who placed 58th with a time of 18:18:01.

Leading the way for the Cavegirls were Rainelle Ruiz, who placed 62nd with a time of 22:23.13, and Soledad Martinez, who turned in a time of 23:33.01 to place 85th.

“I’m happy with the boys’ showing. They all finished strong, and en route to their 11th-place finish, they beat Organ Mountain,” said CHS head coach Michael Sims. “It was disappointing, though, that both Clovis and Hobbs got us again, but I believe when it comes to the district championship time, our kids are going to be much more competitive.

“As for the girls, they weren’t at full strength and haven’t been for some time. But the girls who have been running are competing well,” said Sims. “However, we should have everybody back for district. If that happens, we’re hopeful our girls will have a great shot at qualifying for state.”

The District 4/5A tournament will take place in Roswell on Friday, October 31. The races get underway at 3 p.m. The top three teams, in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions, will qualify for state.

The Cavemen and Cavegirls will be idle for the weekend of October 24-25.
