When the Carlsbad High School swimmers hosted their Holiday Invitational on Saturday, December 13, those who showed up to compete had a huge surprise in store.

This year, due to pool problems, CHS hosted the event in Artesia. However, as difficult as it may have been to relocate for the meet, Carlsbad’s kids swam very well.

Through it all, the Cavegirls finished second and the Cavemen third. Eight teams were in attendance for the meet.

“Even though we had to move our home meet to Artesia because our pool is down, our swimmers stepped up and had a great meet,” said CHS head coach Samantha Segura. “We came away with two state-qualifying relay teams, and multiple kids dropped time to get closer to their individual state cuts. Overall, it was a really positive day for our kids.”

Samuel Vega, Benjamin Jang, Constantine Gonzales, and Kason Longbine teamed up to qualify for state in two relays, the 200 medley, with a time of 1:48.62, and the 200 free, with a time of 1:38.45.

Carlsbad High’s swimmers will compete next on January 10 at the Albuquerque Academy Invitational.
