Following a slow start, the Carlsbad Cavemen rallied down the stretch to rout the Clovis Wildcats 48-30 during first-round action of the District 4/5A Basketball Tournament in Carlsbad on Tuesday night, February 25.

Down 12-7 at the end of the first quarter, Carlsbad High outscored the Wildcats 41-18 over the final three periods of play to grab the 48-30 win.

The victory kept the Cavemen very much alive in their quest to capture this year’s District 4/5A tournament title.

Junior forward Shane Sullivan scored 15 points and hauled in 10 rebounds in leading CHS to the win. Jacob Chavarria, with nine points, and Zenas Huerta, with eight, also had big nights offensively for Carlsbad High.

The Class 5A 14th-ranked Cavemen hit 18 of 30 shots, an average of 60%, from inside the arc and made good on six of eight free throws, an average of 75%, en route to the win.

With the win, the Cavemen, 17-10 on the year, moved on to a district tournament second-round clash with the fourth-ranked, 21-6 Roswell Coyotes on Thursday night, February 27, in the Alien City. Due to a Carlsbad Local, Wednesday, February 26, deadline, results of that game will be posted in the Friday, March 7, edition of the Local.

With a victory over Roswell, the Cavemen would advance to the District 4/5A Tournament final to battle the second-ranked, 23-4 Hobbs Eagles in Hobbs on Saturday night, March 1, at 7:30 p.m.
