The Cavegirl basketball team pushed their season record up to 2-1 following a 39-32 victory over the Alamogordo Tigers in Alamogordo on Monday, December 1. The Cavegirls rode the hot hand of freshman low-post Serenity Medrano’s 16-point effort to get the win.

Down 16-13 at the half, CHS rallied to outscore the Tigers 23-16 over the final two frames.

Especially big for the Cavegirls was the third period of competition. CHS put up 15 points during the eight-minute span, while holding Alamogordo to just three.

Serenity Medrano dropped in two field goals and went three-for-four at the line to lead all CHS scoring in the frame with seven. Point guard Serena Carrasco dropped in four.

“It was Alamo’s first game of the season. They had a big crowd on hand, and they took the floor during the first half with a lot of energy. During that time, we missed quite a few shots,” said Cavegirl head coach Matt Enloe. “But we weathered the first-half storm and came back in the second to get the win. I was really proud of the way our kids kept their composure and fought back.”

Following a rough start on the new season, a 53-20 loss to El Paso Eastlake, the Cavegirls have appeared to right their ship.

“Right now, we’re playing much better. That’s a goal of ours, to get better with each game we play,” said the Cavegirl coach. “But we’re only three games into the new season. We still have a long way to go to get where we need to be.”

Currently, the Cavegirls are competing in the Artesia City of Champions Tournament. The event tipped off on Thursday, December 4, and will run through Friday and Saturday, December 4-6.
