The Carlsbad High School girls’ soccer team, 2-12-2 on the year, have fallen to 0-2-1 in District 4/5A.

But, although unable to mount up a victory in district play, the Cavegirls have shown a marked degree of improvement.

Following a conference inaugural 4-0 loss to Hobbs, the Cavegirls, on Saturday, October 3, tied the Clovis Wildcats 1-1, and on Tuesday, October 6, battled the Roswell Coyotes tough before dropping a 1-0 decision.

Scoring for the Cavegirls in their 1-1 stalemate with Clovis was Katie Barnhart on an assist from Ju-Ju Licon.

“We’ve gotten a few players back from injuries, and we’ve been able to get some much-needed rest. It’s been a great formula for our girls to begin getting back on track,” said Cavegirl head coach Misty Long. “Healthier now, we’re much more competitive.

“As of late, our girls have refocused on what we can do, and putting things together,” said Long. “During a season decimated by so many injures, it’s gratifying to watch our girls begin playing up to their capabilities.”

The Cavegirls will tip off the second round of conference play on Tuesday, October 13, against the district-leading Hobbs Eagles (9-6-2, 2-0-1) in Carlsbad. The JVs play first at 4:30 p.m., the varsity takes the field at 6:30 p.m.

Cavemen Keep Battling

When Cavemen fans take a good look at the level of competition the young and struggling Carlsbad Cavemen have had to endure in this year’s race for the District 4/5A crown, they’ll have a much better idea of just why Carlsbad’s boys are 0-3 in conference play.

All three of their league opponents have logged double-digit wins in 2026, and two of three are ranked among the top five teams in Class 5A soccer. Currently Hobbs, 14-0-2, is ranked No. 2 and Roswell, 14-1-1, is ranked No. 3.

So, as difficult as it’s been getting first-year head coach Aaron Babcock’s young team on track, the level of competition hasn’t made it any easier for them.

On Saturday, October 3, Carlsbad fell to the Clovis Wildcats 6-0, and on Tuesday, October 6, they fell to the Roswell Coyotes 10-0.

On Tuesday, October 13, the Cavemen will swing back into action, for another very tough match with the Hobbs Eagles in Hobbs. The JVs play first at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6 p.m.
