The Carlsbad Cavegirls bounced the Hobbs Eagles 9-2 and 10-5 in a District 4/5A doubleheader in the Cavern City on Monday, April 21.

The two victories gave CHS a firm grip on the race for this year’s conference title. With the sweep of the Eagles, the Cavegirls are now 6-0 in district play, three full games ahead of the 3-3 Birds.

The Cavegirls, 14-6 on the year and ranked eighth in Class 5A softball, will pick up conference play once again on Friday, April 25, against the Clovis Wildcats in Clovis. Earlier this season, Carlsbad downed the Cats 15-0, 15-0. Game times are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Cavegirls Kayo the Eagles

Carlsbad High lashed out 27 hits—15 for extra bases—en route to sweeping the Hobbs Eagles 9-2 and 10-5.

The Cavegirls, in control at the plate and inside the circle, registered 13 hits—seven for extra bases—in thumping the Eagles 9-2 in the twi-night doubleheader opener.

Four Cavegirls recorded multiple hits in the victory. They were Allyson Madrid, 3-4 with a double; Vianka Villa, 3-4 with a triple; Katrina Ortega, 2-3 with a double and a triple; and Parris Weldon, 2-3 with a double.

Picking up the win was CHS hurler Kalion Fuentes. Fuentes kept the Eagles in check throughout the ball game, allowing the Birds just two runs on four hits. She walked four and struck out 14.

In the nightcap, trailing Hobbs 4-0, the Cavegirls exploded for six runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to grab a 6-4 lead. It was a lead CHS wouldn’t relinquish as they went on to defeat the Eagles 10-5.

Aubrey Hernandez, in the circle, limited the Eagles to just five hits on the night. In going the distance, the senior right-hander walked four while recording 10 strikeouts. Only three of the Hobbs Eagles’ five runs were earned.

CHS collected 14 hits against Hobbs in the 10-5 win. Gathering two hits each were Katrina Ortega, 2-2 with a double and triple; Kalion Fuentes, 2-3 with a double; Makayla Chester, 2-4 with two doubles; and Parris Weldon, 2-4 with a double. Faith Rivera and Kenda Ortega each went 2-4.

On Thursday, April 17, the Cavegirls downed the Roswell Coyotes 12-1 and 17-4. Game recaps are posted below:
