After dropping their first two volleyball games of the new season to Las Cruces Schools (the Centennial Hawks 0-3 and the Mayfield Trojans 0-3) on Friday and Saturday, August 21-22, the Cavegirls rallied to register their first win of the season with a tough-fought 3-2 victory over the Artesia Bulldogs.

The game took place in the Cavern City on Tuesday night, August 25.

Since their opening 0-3 loss to Centennial, the Cavegirls have steadily shown promise for a competitive run for this year's District 4/5A title and trip to the state tournament.

Against the Mayfield Trojans, only seven total points separated the two schools in CHS's 0-3 loss. While the Trojans scored 75 points overall to get the win, the Cavegirls put up 68.

Carlsbad's gritty effort vs. Mayfield carried on over to their 3-2 victory over Artesia. In an up-and-down series that saw the Cavegirls and Bulldogs trade shots in a see-saw classic, both schools played to a 2-2 stalemate after their first four sets.

However, the Cavegirls, with a gutsy performance in the fifth, grabbed the final set and the win, 15-12.

The Cavegirls, now 1-2 on the year, will next compete in the Las Cruces Public Schools Invitational on Friday and Saturday, August 28-29. On Tuesday, September 1, the CHS girls will be back in the Cavern City to entertain the Lovington Wildcats.

The JVs will take the court first against Lovington at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6 p.m.
