After dropping a 3-2 match to the Clovis Wildcats and a 3-1 match to the Roswell Coyotes, one might have wondered if the Cavegirl volleyball team had any fight left in them.

The two losses got them off to a 0-2 start in district play and left them sitting at 5-14 on the season.

However, for those who might still be wondering, stop! Carlsbad’s girls have more than a lot of life left in them!

On Tuesday night in Carlsbad, the Cavegirls rolled over the District 4/5A leader Hobbs Eagles 3-1 to pick up their first conference win of the season!

Knocking off the District 4/5A kingpin has the Cavegirls right back in the thick of things for this year’s district title. Only one game separates Carlsbad, 1-2, from district leader Hobbs, 2-1.

While CHS has had problems closing matches this year, that wasn’t the case with the Hobbs Eagles.

“We’ve been working really hard on the mental side of our game to be prepared to fight,” said Cavegirl head coach Taylor Hardison. “It really showed up big tonight. Our girls were not only ready to play; they were ready to win, and they did!”

The Cavegirls downed Hobbs 25-13 in the first set but dropped the second 25-23. However, this time, there would be no hiccup for the remainder of the match. The Cavegirls rallied to take the third set 25-18 and the fourth 25-22 to close out the Hobbs Eagles 3-1.

“The win against Hobbs was a really big one for our girls,” said Hardison. “It’s going to help keep them motivated, keep them pushing and believing in themselves.

“I’m just so proud of the effort all of our girls put out,” said the Cavegirl coach. “But this one’s behind us, and now it’s time to move on.”

The Cavegirls will take on the Clovis Wildcats in Clovis on Tuesday, October 28. On Thursday, October 30, they’ll return to Carlsbad to battle the Roswell Coyotes.
