The Cavegirl basketball team was originally scheduled to open up conference play on Tuesday, January 27, against the Clovis Wildcats. However, due to bad weather, their game was canceled. The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 3, in Clovis. The JVs will open up play vs. the Wildcats at 4 p.m., with the varsity taking the floor at 5:30 p.m.

Due to the cancellation, the Cavegirls will now open up District 4/5A play against the Roswell Coyotes in Carlsbad on Friday, January 30. JV action will get underway at 5:30 p.m. The varsity will tip off at 7 p.m.

The Cavegirls will take the floor with a seasonal record of 9-11. In Class 5A play, they’ve been ranked 20th by MaxPreps. The Lady Coyotes are 8-11 and ranked 18th.

The two clubs have already faced off once this year. On December 5 at the Artesia City of Champions Invitational, Roswell downed CHS 50-24.

But the Cavegirls are a much-improved team since that loss, and recent comparable scores indicate that the outcome of the game could be a toss-up.

“Although we’ve had our struggles with scoring, we are a much better team than we were when we played Roswell in December,” said Cavegirl head coach Matt Enloe. “This time, as it’s worked out, we get them in Carlsbad for our district opener. It’s also going to be Senior Night for us. So, our girls have a lot to be excited about.”

Leading the Cavegirls offensively into Friday night’s conference opener will be 5’8” freshman Serenity Medrano, 5’5” senior Serena Carrasco, and 5’6” senior Hayden Brose. Currently, Hudl Digital stats has Medrano averaging 9.2 points per contest, Carrasco, 8.2, and Brose, 4.4.

“We’ll be looking their way for points vs. the Coyotes,” said Enloe. “But we feel all our girls are capable of scoring. So, for us, if our girls on the floor get a good look, we want them to put the ball up.”

Cavegirls drop Santa Teresa: In their final pre-district tuneup of the season, the Cavegirls routed the Santa Teresa Desert Warriors 59-6. Nine Cavegirls found their way to the bucket in the win.

Cavegirl Faith Kluesner led all scorers with 12 points. Serenity Medrano also scored in double figures with 10.
