Cavegirls Host Clovis in District 4/5A Opener

District play gets underway for the Carlsbad Cavegirls on Tuesday, April 15, in the Cavern City.

The Cavegirls, 8-6 on the year and ranked 11th by MaxPreps, will entertain the 1-9 Clovis Wildcats in their District 4/5A inaugural. The Cats are ranked 27th.

The first pitch for the scheduled twin bill is set for 5 p.m., followed by the nightcap at 7 p.m.

Leading the way at the plate for CHS will be Faith Rivera, who has accumulated a batting average of .372. Also swinging big bats for CHS have been Kalion Fuentes, .366, and Parris Weldon, .350. Fuentes also leads the team in round-trippers with six.

CHS Routs Artesia Bulldogs

The bats came alive, as did the pitching, for the Carlsbad Cavegirls during a scheduled double-header with the Class 4A third-ranked Artesia Bulldogs on Monday, April 7, in Big Orange Country.

Carlsbad’s girls banged out eight hits while limiting Artesia to just four en route to a 10-1 victory in their opener.

Kalion Fuentes went 3-4 at the plate with three RBIs and two doubles. Also swinging a big bat was Katrina Ortega. The CHS sophomore went 2-3 with three RBIs and a home run.

Fuentes, inside the circle, picked up the win. She allowed Artesia just one run on one hit, with three walks and 13 Ks.

In the nightcap, Carlsbad downed the Bulldogs 7-2. Picking up the victory was Aubrey Hernandez. The senior hurler gave up just two runs on three hits while striking out 13 and walking just one.

Picking up multiple hits for Carlsbad were Faith Rivera, 2-3, and Makayla Chester and Vianka Villa, 2-4.

Equally impressive for the Cavegirls was that they committed just two errors during the Artesia twin-bill. Errors have been somewhat of an Achilles heel for CHS this year.
