The Carlsbad High School Cavegirls swept the Roswell Coyotes, 2-0, 1-0, in the Cavern City on Tuesday, April 29.

The sweep earned CHS, 10-0 in conference play, this year’s District 4/5A championship. Carlsbad’s girls, 18-6 on the year, are ranked eighth among Class 5A softball teams.

Kalion Fuentes, in the twi-night doubleheader opener, held the Coyotes to just one hit in CHS’s 2-0 victory over Roswell. She walked just two and struck out 12 en route to picking up the win.

Leading hitters for CHS were Makayla Chester and Allyson Madrid, who each collected two hits. Aubrey Hernandez, with a round-tripper, lashed out the biggest hit for the Cavegirls.

With Aubrey Hernandez inside the circle during second-game action, the Cavegirls caged the Otes 1-0. Hernandez, who walked five and struck out 13, allowed the Coyotes just one hit.

Collecting hits for the Cavegirls were Kalion Fuentes, Faith Rivera, and Aubrey Hernandez.

It was the third district title in four years for the Cavegirls under the direction of head coach Brian Santo.

“Watching our kids win the district championship was really special; they’ve really come a long way. We got off to a slow start this year, often losing games during the late innings, but our kids have toughened up a lot since then,” said Santo. “Our pitching has really come along, and our defense has improved. That’s two of the reasons we were able to win twice against Roswell after having scored just three total runs.”

“Right now, though, our bats have become somewhat silent,” he said. “If we are to do well in the state tournament, we’re going to have to be more aggressive at the plate. We’ve got to score more runs.”

CHS closed out their district schedule on Thursday, May 1, with a doubleheader against the Hobbs Eagles in Hobbs. Results of those games will be posted in the May 9 edition of the Carlsbad Local.

Cavegirls Slam Clovis

Inside the circle to pick up a win in the doubleheader opener was Cavegirl Katrina Ortega. Collecting the win in the nightcap was Aubrey Hernandez. The following are the Cavegirl reviews.
