The Carlsbad Cavegirls jumped out in front of the Roswell Coyotes 25-18 at the half in the first round of this year’s District 4/5A Basketball Tournament and then held on to record a 38-27 victory over the Otes. The game took place in Carlsbad on Tuesday night, February 25.

Eight Cavegirls found their way to the bucket en route to the win. Nobody found their way there more than senior guard Abbey Dugan, who pumped in 12 points. Other CHS offensive leaders were Hayden Brose, who dropped in seven, and Becca Brown, who added six.

The victory upped the Class 5A’s 12th-ranked Cavegirls record to 18-9 on the year. More importantly, it kept them in the race for this year’s District 4/5A Tournament championship.

As a result of their victory over Roswell, CHS moved on to compete in the second round of the conference tourney against the seventh-ranked, 20-6 Clovis Wildcats in Clovis on Thursday night, February 27. Due to a Wednesday night deadline, February 26, the Local will post the outcome of that game in the Friday, March 7, edition of the Local.

With a victory over Clovis, the Cavegirls would move to take on the top-seeded Hobbs Eagles, 25-1 on the year and ranked No. 1 in New Mexico prep basketball, on Saturday afternoon, March 1, in Hobb, at 5:30 p.m.
