On Tuesday, October 13, the Cavegirl volleyball team will open District 4/5A play in Carlsbad against their old nemesis, the Hobbs Eagles.

With no clear-cut favorite, the race for this year’s conference championship and the ticket to the state tournament that comes with it, appear to be up for grabs.

The Cavegirls will enter their district inaugural with an overall record of 7-7; the Eagles are 5-10.

In District 4/5A’s other conference opener, the 6-10 Roswell Coyotes will host the 10-7 Clovis Wildcats.

District 4/5A and the Race

As Cavegirl head coach Taylor Hardison sees it, the time to make a push for a conference crown couldn’t be much better for her girls.

“No team in our conference has had a dominant year or appears to be unbeatable,” said Hardison. “So, the race for this year’s conference crown should be wide open and exciting.

“We’ve kept a close eye on all of our district opponents and have already competed against Hobbs and Roswell in tournament play, so we know what to expect from all of them,” said Hardison. “Knowing that, we feel pretty confident about our chances of winning this year’s district title.”

Opening conference play at home should be a definite plus for the Cavegirls to kick off the 2026 district race with a win.

“Our girls are especially excited about opening district play at home; it’s their comfort zone. It’s going to be the best possible scenario for them to get off to a strong start in conference play,” said Hardison. “Now, it’s just a matter of going out and getting the job done. Our girls are ready, and eager, for the challenge.”

Coach Hardison hopes to see a large crowd out in support of the Cavegirls in their inaugural District 4/5A contest with Hobbs.

The JVs will take the floor first against the Eagles at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6 p.m.

Cavegirl Probable Lineup: Brinley Brantley, setter, right side; Chloe Lopez, setter; Val Cortez and Elizabeth Tyndorf, middles; Melanie Griffin and Macie Stephens, outsides; Arriana Garcia- Libero.

Final Tune-up vs. Goddard

On Tuesday night, October 6, in Carlsbad, the Cavegirls faced off against the Class 4A’s third-ranked, 11-3, Goddard Rockets. Statewide, the Rockets are ranked ninth.

Goddard proved to be a bit too much for the Carlsbad girls in their final pre-district tune up of the season, as the Cavegirls fell to the Rockets 3-0.

“Our girls did some good things on the floor tonight, and I was proud of the effort they put out to beat the Rockets,” said coach Hardison. “But we have to give credit to Goddard for pulling off the win; they’re very good, and they played like a Top 10 New Mexico volleyball team.”

The loss dropped CHS to 7-7 on the year, the Rockets jumped to 12-3.
