Cavegirl Softball Takes Two from Wildcats

The Carlsbad Cavegirls wasted no time in picking up their first two District 4/5A victories in Carlsbad on Tuesday, April 15.

Behind hurlers Aubrey Hernandez and Kalion Fuentes, the Cavegirls walloped the Clovis Wildcats 15-0 and 15-0. Both games lasted just three innings each.

The victories left CHS atop the conference standings at 2-0. Both Roswell and Hobbs share the second spot at 1-0, with Clovis at 0-2.

On the year, the Cavegirls are 10-6 and ranked seventh among Class 5A teams.

Carlsbad needed just four hits to upend the Cats in the opener of the twi-night doubleheader. Picking up hits for CHS were Parris Weldon, 1-2, Faith Rivera, 1-2, Vianka Villa, 1-3, and Kalion Fuentes, 1-2.

Fuentes logged the biggest hit of the opener. Going yard, with two runners on, she drove in three runs.

Picking up the win was Aubrey Hernandez. In three innings of work, the hard-throwing senior allowed the Wildcats no hits and struck out nine.

In the nightcap, CHS unleased a 10-hit attack en route to downing Clovis 15-0. Leading hitters for the Cavegirls were Kalion Fuentes and Faith Rivera, who each went a perfect 3-3. Also picking up multiple hits were Makayla Chester, 2-2, and Katrina Ortega, 2-3.

In going 3-3, Kalion Fuentes, the Cavegirls queen of swat, launched her eighth home run of the season.

Credited for the win was Fuentes. Inside the circle for just three innings, the CHS senior gave up two hits, with one walk and six Ks on the night.

The Cavegirls were scheduled to take on the Roswell Coyotes on Thursday, April 17, in the Alien City. Roswell, 4-10, has been ranked 21st by MaxPreps. Results of those games will be posted in the April 25 edition of the Carlsbad Local.
