As the 2025 District 4/5A soccer season drew near, very few southeastern New Mexico prep soccer fans thought the 2-9-3 Cavegirls could make a serious run at this year’s conference title.

But guess what? That’s just what Carlsbad’s girls are doing!

After sinking Clovis, 2-0, in their conference opener, the Cavegirls tamed the Roswell Coyotes, 1-0, in Carlsbad on Saturday, October 4.

The victory left them sitting at 2-0 in conference play and at the top of the District 4/5A standings, alongside the 2-0, 12-3 Hobbs Eagles.

The Cavegirls got their lone score in their 1-0 victory over Roswell on a shot from senior Gystazia Segura. Segura made good on her goal on an assist from sophomore Emma Allen.

Although the win may not have been pretty, it was a win.

“For us, this was an ugly win,” said Cavegirl head coach Misty Long. “But as ugly as it might have been, it was a win. That’s exactly what I told my girls. On a stat sheet, it looks as good as any other win.

“But to our girls’ credit, they’ve been putting in a lot of hard work, and all the hard work is beginning to pay off,” said the CHS coach. “Everyone on our team is stepping up to make big plays for us. Watching them play so hard, and have success, has been a lot of fun for myself and our coaching staff.”

On Tuesday, October 7, the Cavegirls were in Hobbs to take on the Class 5A sixth-ranked Eagles.

“Hobbs has a great team, and it’s always tough to have to play them on the road,” said Long. “But if we play as hard as we have been, and leave it all out on the field, I think we’ll be okay.”

Update: Cavegirls at Hobbs

On Tuesday night, Oct. 7, the up and coming 22nd-ranked Carlsbad Cavegirls battled the 6th ranked Hobbs Eagles, in Hobbs, for first place in this year’s District 4/5A race. Both teams entered the match with identical 2-0 conference records.

Unfortunately, CHS dropped southeastern New Mexico’s biggest soccer clash of the evening 1-0. But the Cavegirls gave the Eagles all they could handle. Carlsbad now 2-1, in the conference play, occupies second place.

The Cavegirls will next take on the Clovis Wildcats (3-12-2, 1-2), in Carlsbad, on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The JVs will take the field at 4:00, the varsity at 6:00.

In the two teams first conference meeting of the year the Cavegirls upended the Wildcats 2-1.
