Cavegirl Linksters 3rd at Bulldog Classic

The Carlsbad Cavegirl golf team, behind Haddi May’s 86, placed third at the Artesia Bulldog Classic on Monday, April 6. Eight teams teed up for the event.

May’s effort landed her among the tourney’s top 10 placers. Overall, she finished ninth. Six strokes back of May, with a 92, was Averee Padilla, who placed 12th to finish in the top 20.

Also placing in the top 20 were Hailey Carter, 14th, with a 93, and Cecilia Mascarenas, 19th, with a 99.

“Haddi really had a good round in Artesia,” said CHS golf coach Brian Jones. “Although she did face some adversity during the day, she never backed off and went on to record three birdies.”

Lovington, with a 315, grabbed the tournament championship, while host Artesia, which fired a 351, placed second. Carlsbad, en route to its third-place showing, carded a 370.

In boys’ division play, the Cavemen, in a field of nine, logged a 345 to finish fifth. Artesia, with a 293, claimed its own Bulldog Classic title.

Becker Barnes, with an 83, and Chevy Thompson, with an 84, led the Carlsbad effort. Both top 20 placers, Barnes finished 18th and Thompson 20th.

“Becker’s only a freshman, so watching him post an 83 was special. It certainly makes me optimistic about the future,” said the CHS coach. “Chevy, who pushed Becker throughout the day, also had a good round.”

On Monday and Tuesday, April 13-14, the CHS golf teams will compete in the LeRoy Gooch Invitational in Ruidoso. Play will take place at the Links Golf Course and will get underway at 9 a.m.

“With only two meets under our belts, it’s still very early in the season,” said Jones. “Still trying to figure things out, and a ways off from peaking, our kids work hard to get better every day.”

Note: On Thursday, April 9, CHS competed in the Black/Murphy Invitational in Lovington. Results of that meet will be posted in the April 17 edition of the Carlsbad Local.
