Cavegirl Golfers Sixth at State Tourney

The Carlsbad Cavegirls carded a 756 to finish sixth at the Class 5A Girls State Golf Tournament in Las Cruces on Monday and Tuesday, May 11-12.

Organ Mountain, 16 strokes better than the runner-up La Cueva Bears, who recorded a two-day total of 671, fired a 655 to claim this year’s state title.

For the Cavegirls, there was much more to contend with than just the seven other teams that had assembled in the City of Crosses with hopes of winning this year’s state title.

“A very tough NMSU course, some really hot weather, and having three of our girls not feeling well made two very challenging days of golf for our kids,” said CHS head coach Brian Jones. “But they battled through it all, and despite having so much to deal with, had a pretty good tournament overall.”

Leading the Cavegirl effort was Madisyn Beavers. Only a freshman, she carded rounds of 91 and 88 for a 179.

“Madisyn’s come a long way this year. Starting out the season on our JV squad, she battled her way to a spot on the varsity,” said Jones. “Besides working hard, she’s very consistent and doesn’t seem to let things get to her on the course.

“Add to that, after firing a 91 on Monday, Madisyn comes back to card an 88 on Tuesday. I’d say that’s pretty impressive,” said the CHS coach. “But Madisyn wasn’t our only player to have a big Tuesday. Haddi May, only a sophomore, also recorded an 88, and Averee Padilla, just a junior, recorded a 91. So, overall, our kids did a lot of things for us to be excited about.”

Rounding out CHS’s scorecard were Haddi May, 95-88-183; Averee Padilla, 93-91-184; Hailey Carter, 106-104-210; and Grace Thompson, 116-107-223.

“Although we’ve had some ups and downs this year, our kids have really enjoyed a great year of golf. But the best news about this group of girls is that they’ll all be back next year,” said Jones. “And that’s something to really get excited about.”
