Boys and Girls Club

Submitted by Valarie WaddleWe have been busy!Back in July, The Club teamed up with the Cavemen Soccer Team to host our first ever Benefit Sporting Clay Shoot. The fundraiser featured special drawings, food trucks, and the Gould Brother’s trick shooters, for some live entertainment. Jet Specialty LLC, Mondale LLC, Lucky Health & Safety LLC, and SB ENERGY services were among the top sponsors.Another first for The Club, was a summer Jr NBA basketball league. With 150 players over 4 divisions, the summer season was a great way to way to welcome back sports! Champions in the 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, and 12+ divisions: Mavs coached by Josh Rodriguez, Heat coached by Angelica Regalado and Phil, Bulls -coached by JD McCormick and Kevin Parham, and Mavs -coached by Damian Perez and RJ Amos, respectively. Special thanks to Michael Ramirez for filling in as our Basketball Program Coordinator. You the real MVP, Mike! The final “first” of the summer was a fundraiser cornhole tournament, hosted by Carlsbad’s own, Cave Kings. Our Roadrunner gym served as the site for theinaugural event, with over 40 participants giving their best efforts in 4 divisions. Thank you Josh Rodriguez and Cave Kings for hosting this event. The end of summer also marked our summer team members going off to college, returning to school, and participating in high school sports. Although they will all be greatly missed, we look forward to watching them pursue their dreams and cannot wait for them to return. Those who remained, who are equally as exceptional, are working hard to continue providing our members with a safe and positive environment to thrive in. If you ask them what they love about their job, the answer is always “the kids!” Our team members love being part of our members’ lives, hearing about their school day, watching them grow, and how much they appreciate the opportunity to experience the little (and not so little) victories. If you ask the Club Directors, we would say that watching our team love and support our members, and vice versa, on the good days and the bad is the best part of our job. Just like our Summer Explore theme suggested, our staff is truly World Class! After school programming is in high gear at the Club. With just over a hundred registered members, next week we will kick off our SMART Moves program. SMART Moves usesa team approach that involves Club staff, peer leaders, parents and community representatives. Young people ages 6 to 15 engage in discussion and role-playing, practicing resilience and refusal skills, developing assertiveness, strengthening decision-making skills and analyzing media and peer influence. The ultimate goal is to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent risky behaviors, through the practice of responsible behavior. The highly anticipated Flag Football season is also underway, with over two hundred players currently registered. Late registrations are now open, online only, at clubs.bluesombrero.com/carlsbadflag. We invite all kids from grades kindergarten to 7th grade to register to play. Loving families are encouraged to register their youth, in hopes of growing our program and including all members of our community. For more information about these events, upcoming programs, and other Club happenings, visit our Facebook page, our website or contact The Club directly!@bgcarlsbadnm www.bgcarlsbadnm.org Info@bgcarlsbadnm.org (575)885-8449
