The prep tennis season officially opened up for Carlsbad High on Friday and Saturday, February 13-14, at the El Paso Austin Invitational.

According to CHS assistant coach Diamond Morrill, the Cavemen and Cavegirls got off to a good start.

“As this was our first tournament of the season, our kids played pretty well. We have a lot of young players this year, so many of them were a bit nervous as the tournament got underway,” said Morrill. “But after they got out on the court, they loosened up and began to play well.

“Our girls’ team is a bit inexperienced this year, but we feel they have a lot of potential, so we’re all excited to see just how far they can come by the end of the season,” she said. “As for our boys, they do have some returnees. However, the boys on our lower ladder consist of several young and new faces.”

Although serving as their season-opener, and despite battling some inexperience and nervousness, both the Cavemen and Cavegirls did experience success on the El Paso Austin Courts.

In Gold Division Bracket play, Caveman Lucas Bluth posted a 3-1 record to place third in singles play, while Cavegirl Charise Young, after logging a 2-2 record, placed sixth.

For placing third, Bluth received a bronze medal.

In Silver Division Bracket play, Caveman Sean Erosido went 4-0 to grab the boys’ singles title, while Cavegirl Myka Char posted a 3-1 record to place fifth.

For capturing first, Erosido received a gold medal.

Next up for the Cavemen and Cavegirls will be the Statewide Invitational in Albuquerque on Friday and Saturday, February 20-21.
