Bits & Pieces by Don Eskins: Rogers Stays Put; Perry Back on the Mound

During June, July, and August, few major leaguers have hurled a baseball better than former Caveman Trevor Rogers. And since stepping up big this summer, his fortunes with the Baltimore Orioles have exploded.

Following a slow start earlier this season, he’s posted an eye-catching ERA of just 2.28 with 60 strikeouts through 67 innings of mound duty during the summer months.

As a result of his improved play, trade rumors due to his slow start have been put to rest as the Orioles have opted to keep him on this year’s roster. The deadline for trades in MLB was August 3.

According to reports, Rogers, who wants to continue to be a part of the Orioles’ drive for the playoffs, couldn’t be happier about staying put with the Birds.

Update: Rogers took the mound first on Monday night, August 10, for the Orioles’ opener in their recent series with the Minnesota Twins. He pitched for 4.0 innings on the night and gave up two earned runs on four hits and two walks, with four strikeouts.

Absorbing a 9-5 loss to the Twins, his overall record dropped to 7-8. On the season, he now owns an ERA of 4.21.

Perry Wowed Them in AA Ball

Eighteen days after being hit on the side of the head by a line drive, former Caveman Nolan Perry was back on the mound for Double-A New Hampshire.

Having sustained a concussion following his mishap on July 19, he was originally listed as week-to-week by the Toronto Blue Jays. However, after just two and a half weeks of recovery protocol, he was back in action.

On Thursday night, August 6, the Blue Jays’ number one pitching prospect to move up to the majors, tossed three innings of no-hit baseball in helping New Hampshire to defeat Portland 5-2.

Since joining Double-A New Hampshire, he has yet to give up a run. Although having been on the mound for just 7.1 innings, his glittering ERA of 0.00 is certainly enticing for Toronto.
