By Don EskinsHaving a great day on a golf course is one thing, but lighting it up is another. And lighting it up is just what Bob Nesbit, age 68, did recently at the Lake Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course. On July 18, Nesbit carded an incredible eight under par 64 topping it off with a ‘Hole in One’ on the 169 yard par three sixteenth.“It was the best round of golf I’ve ever played in my life,” he said. “I’ve had a few 68’s and a 67 but I’ve never had a round like this one.”Following a bogey on his opening hole of play, Nesbit went on to reel off five birdies and three pars to post a four under par 32 on the front nine. He then followed that up with six pars, two birdies and an eagle (Hole in one) on thebackside for another four under par 32 to finish out his day with a blistering eight under par 64. “I was hitting the ball dead on and putting really well, and because I was putting so well, I was able to save a few pars during my round,” said Nesbit. “But I also missed a few birdie opportunities, and had I have been able to drop them in, could have posted an even better score. But right now, a 64 looks pretty good to me.”Also looking pretty good was the hole in one on his scorecard. While logging a 64 proved to be a great feat for the Carlsbad senior, acing the sixteenth hole made it special. Few have ever gotten to experience an eight under par round of golf, let alone one highlighted by a hole in one.As he stood in the tee box of the sixteenth hole, overlooking the green, Nesbit pulled out his five iron.“I hit it right at the flag,” he said. “The ball hit about three feet in front of the pin and rolled right into the cup.” Playing partners with Nesbit for the event were Tracy Haynes and Mario Carrasco. Now sitting on a 56, after sixteen holes of play, the question was could he close it out? The answer was yes as he went on to par the final two holes of play to record his sizzling 64, one of the best scores ever carded at the Lake Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course.“All of us around here were really excited for him,” said the municipal golf course’s J.W. Sutphin. “But for Bob it was just another day on the course. He’s pretty low keyed and doesn’t get too excited about most things.”While carding a 64 may have been a first for Nesbit recording a hole in one wasn’t. He’s also posted aces on the muni’s 180-yard par 3-7th hole and the 145 yard par 3-11th.“I’ve played some pretty fair golf before but carding good scores on both the front and back nines has been difficult,” said Nesbit. “So, walking off the course following rounds of 32-32 for an eight under par 64, with a hole in one on my scorecard, felt great. This is one I’m going to remember for a long time.”Lake Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course linksters will too.
