Cavegirls grab District 4Awin over ClovisBy Don EskinsThe Cavegirl volleyball team opened up 2021 District 4A play with a 3-1 victory over the Clovis Wildcats on Tuesday night (Oct. 12) at Carlsbad High School.Enroute to the four set victory the Cavegirls defeated the Wildcats 25-17, 18-25, 25-23 and 25-19.It was a great start, in District 4A play, for the Cavegirls who have struggled throughout the season. Currently they sit at 5-10 on the year. Leading theway for the Cavegirls, in their 3-1 win over Clovis, were Gracie Eckles with 19 kills, Brynlee Daughtry with 16 assists and Annika Sowers with 13 digs and 4 aces."We had a lot of girls step up for us tonight and we did have some girls who turned in stand out performances," said Cavegirl head coach Bill Niemeier. "But what impressed me the most about our win was that everybody did their job. I'd have to say that this was definitely a complete team win for us."Making a run in District 4AAlthough the road for this year's Cavegirls has been somewhat rocky at times, Niemeier has never lost confidence in his young team. He's been saying all season long that if his kids just keep working hard they could make a run at this year's District 4A title. "We do have a great bunch of kids on our team this year, they have been working hard and tonight they got a district win. They were ready to play and I'm so proud of them all," said Niemeier. "Not, just for tonight's win, but also for never giving up on us."Now, with a district opener victory safely behind them, Niemeier says that he feels his girls have an excellent chance to contend for this year's district title."I think our girls have a great shot at getting a win over Roswell," said Niemeier. "As for Hobbs they have to be the District 4A frontrunner right now. But, if we play them at our best, I think our girls will have a great shot at beating them also."Next up for the Cavegirlswill be Hobbs. CHS will play host to the Eagles on Tuesday, Oct. 19. Game time is set for 6:30.Currently, through Oct. 13, the Eagles were 10-8 on the year. After defeating Roswell 3-0 on Oct. 12 they sit at 1-0 in conference play and are ranked 14th inClass 5A.
